Few developments in the legal tech industry have jolted general counsel the way generative AI has, given its anticipated impacts on departments’ budgets, outside counsel billables and helping in-house lawyers better keep pace with their workloads.
Whatever levels of hype accompany lawyers’ march toward gen AI integration, the technology is already deployed and proving itself for many legal executives dealing with cost issues.
The legal profession finds itself “at a pivotal point in time where lawyers will essentially change the way that we work,” Tanja Podinic, senior vice president of AI programs at legal tech provider ContractPodAi, said in discussing the disruption that gen AI tools bring to legal practice.
Amid this era of workplace change, the Association of Corporate Counsel membership gathers October 6-9 for its annual meeting.
The conference will draw nearly 3,000 general counsel and other legal professionals to Nashville, Tenn., for four days of networking, legal educational sessions and product demonstrations. Around 100 sponsors will display their legal tech products — most of them incorporating new features and capabilities enabled by gen AI language models.
Of course, in-house lawyers tackle plenty of business that doesn’t involve technology or the re-engineering of their roles.
As most states require attorneys to obtain annual legal training, the ACC event provides multiple educational sessions that qualify for these credits. (A one-hour session typically equals one credit.)
Among the sessions expected to be popular:
- How to connect your risk management efforts to compliance and the advantages and disadvantages of self-reporting to regulators.
- Best practices for AI innovation and integration as your department sets AI guidelines and policy.
- How in-house lawyers can protect privilege given the challenges of widespread remote work, and how to identify your client and keep clear distinctions between your legal advice and business guidance.
- Navigating the challenges of having employees in multiple states.
- How to increase the number of “yes” approvals from your legal department without compromising risk management initiatives.
- An overview of global privacy laws and the compliance challenges global companies confront.
