Southern Company, a leading energy provider, announced that Sterling Spainhour has been named executive vice president, chief legal officer and chief compliance officer effective at the end of March.
Spainhour currently serves as senior vice president, general counsel and chief compliance officer for Georgia Power.
Before assuming this role in July 2020, Sterling served as senior vice president and general counsel of Southern Company Services.
Prior to joining Southern Company, Sterling was a partner at Jones Day for many years where his practice focused on mergers and acquisitions.
Marqeta
The global card issuing platform announced the addition of Crystal Sumner as chief legal officer.
Sumner comes to Marqeta from cloud-based banking platform Blend, where she served as the head of Legal, Compliance and Risk. She helped lead the growing company through its IPO in 2021.
Sumner’s experience prior to Blend included working as an enforcement attorney at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Mr. Cooper Group
The home loan company announced the appointment of Carlos Pelayo as executive vice president and chief legal officer.
Pelayo has more than 20 years of legal experience, having most recently served as managing director and legal executive for Merrill Lynch Wealth Management, a division of Bank of America.
Previously, Pelayo served as managing director and general counsel for Barclays’ investment-driven private banking business in the Americas. He also worked in private practice with the international law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell.

Carbon
The 3D printing technology company announced the appointment of Karrie Rexford as senior vice president, general counsel.
Rexford brings more than 25 years of experience to the role, including more than 17 years at the global medical device company Align Technology. She served as Align’s VP and global associate general counsel.
Additionally, in recent years she has held GC roles at Tandem Diabetes Care and Health IQ.

Calloquy
The remote litigation platform announced Brie Buchanan has been named its vice president and chief legal officer.
She most recently served as VP and general counsel at the fintech Relay Payments. Prior to that, she served as an associate general counsel at the global manufacturer Neenah.
Buchanan also worked as an intellectual property and commercial litigator for large law firms, including Alston & Bird and McGuireWoods.
