Oracle, the multinational corporation known for its database software, announced it has named Stuart Levey its executive vice president and chief legal officer.
Levey served from 2012 to 2020 as CLO at global banking giant HSBC Holdings, where he managed a department of more than 900 lawyers.
Prior to HSBC, he was named the nation’s first Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence at the U.S. Treasury Department by President George W. Bush. Most recently, Levey served as CEO of the Diem Association.
“Stuart has one of the sharpest legal minds in the country,” said Oracle CEO Safra Catz. “His depth of experience in technology, finance, and national security make him a perfect fit to lead our legal team as it navigates changing policies, complex regulations, and our rapidly growing cloud business.”
Oracle’s hiring of Levey aligns with a recent trend of Fortune 500 companies more frequently hiring external candidates for legal chief posts rather than promoting internal candidates.
AffiniPay
The professional services payments and practice management software announced it has named Catherine Dawson as general counsel.
She most recently served for two years as the GC and chief privacy officer at the data privacy platform Osano. Prior to that, Dawson was the GC and later the CLO at the IT company Spiceworks for seven years.
Her time in private practice includes working for 10 years at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati.

Ohio Northern University
The private university in Ada, Ohio announced Lisa Lang has been named its vice president and general counsel effective November 15.
Lang most recently served as the general counsel at Kentucky State University for more than five years.
She previously worked in Kentucky’s Office of the Attorney General as an assistant attorney general and then for the Kentucky Department of Education serving in various in-house roles beginning in 2011 until 2017.
“Ohio Northern University is an excellent institution with a dedicated campus community that shares a deep commitment to the success of our students and our region,” Lang said in a statement. “I am excited to join President Melissa Baumann and all faculty and staff in achieving our shared mission and goals.”
Buzzfeed
The media company announced in a regulatory filing that David Arroyo will be promoted to chief legal officer and corporate secretary, effective Jan 2.
Arroyo has more than 25 years of experience in news, cable television, digital publishing and large law firm practice, most recently as senior vice president, chief compliance officer and head of litigation at BuzzFeed.
Prior to joining BuzzFeed in 2019, Arroyo was senior vice president, global head of compliance at Discovery from 2018 to 2019. He also spent 14 years working in-house for Scripps Networks Interactive.
American Financial Group
The insurance holding company announced it has promoted Mark Weiss to senior vice president and general counsel effective December 1.
Weiss joined American Financial Group in 2010 as assistant vice president and assistant general counsel. In 2015, he was promoted to VP, and he assumed the role of chief compliance officer in 2020.
Prior to joining AFG, Weiss served as a corporate and transactional lawyer at Keating Muething & Klekamp.
